Why turn-based RPGs still belong on your phone

April 4, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

There's a common idea that RPGs are too heavy for phones. I disagree, and Emberfall Saga is exhibit A. Turn-based combat is naturally suited to stop-and-go play, which is how most of us use our phones anyway.

The key is pacing. A good mobile RPG lets you dip in for one fight and put it down without losing the thread. The ones that force long uninterrupted sessions are the ones that don't respect the platform.

What I look for is a combat system that's interesting without a controller. Positioning, timing, resource management, these translate beautifully to touch. Fancy real-time action often doesn't.

If you've written off RPGs on mobile, try a turn-based one on your next slow afternoon. The genre and the platform get along better than the reputation suggests.
